The Institute of Public Health Koper was founded in 1957. It emerged from the then District Hygiene Station, and its purpose was to develop preventive health services in the area of six southern littoral municipalities alongside the already present basic, specialist and hospital services. It was subsequently renamed the Institute of Public Health and became TOZD (basic unit of integrated work) of the Health Centre Koper the Institute of Social Medicine and Hygiene Koper in 1978. The Government of the Republic of Slovenia issued a decision in 1993, whereby the Institute of Social Medicine Koper was transformed into the public health institute bearing the name of the Institute of Public Health Koper.
Following many years of the Institute’s operation, we can today look back with pride and display unflagging optimism for the future. The introduction of the market economy brought about profound changes and the Institute has been bravely endeavouring to find its place under the sun.
The realization that the increase in health expenditure can pose a threat to competitiveness of even the most successful economies forced the Institute to seek an efficient model of health protection by following principles of the market economy. We are fully aware that only economically efficient system can be sustainable at the same time. In other words, the system which offers high-quality services, uses funds appropriately and heeds economic principles. The activities pursued within the Institute focus on health protection and promotion as well as prevention of detrimental influences on one’s health.
